"Tom-a-thon" is a Huge Success
8/1/06
On May 23, the Shenandoah Valley Spay/Neuter Clinic performed its 10,000th surgery. Cally, a calico cat found in her guardian's backyard was the 10,000th animal to have surgery. To commemorate reaching this milestone, the clinic in collaboration with Cat's Cradle (a local animal welfare organization) had a Tomathon the end of June. Since many unspayed females are nursing their young at the beginning of the summer, this was a good time to hold the event. 82 males were altered and vaccinated against rabies for $10 each. Community awareness of the need to spay and neuter companion animals has been growing and the clinic is expected to reach the goal of 8,000 surgeries for 2006.
Spay Virginia Clinics Reach 10,000 Surgeries
12/31/05
In January of 2005, Spay Virginia opened two high volume, reduced cost, spay/neuter clinics. The clinics have had a busy year. By establishing relationships with local animal welfare groups and the general public the clinics combined surpassed their 10,000 surgery. This by any standard is a reason to celebrate!

Each volunteer earned the Heroic Effort Award from North Shore Animal League. They include: Rita Anderson, Melissa Bahleda and Teresa Dockery.
Spay Virginia is proud to have such wonderful volunteers on our team.
Margaret B. Mitchell Spay/Neuter Clinic
Now Open in Bristol
1/30/05
In honor of the founder of the Bristol Humane Society, Margaret B. Mitchell, a spay/neuter clinic that performs high-volume low-cost surgeries is now open Bristol. The clinic, owned by Spay Virginia, a project of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies services the entire Southwest Region of Virginia and Sullivan County, Tennessee.
When fully grown out, the clinic will employee 15 people including 3 full-time veterinarians and sterilize 18,000 cats and dogs annually. The clinic provides free transport service to rural communities and municipal shelters shuttling animals to the clinic for surgery.
This project is a model that any community in Virginia or across the nation can duplicate. The organizations in this region have joined together to focus on the single objective of ending overpopulation in their communities. There is a tremendous amount of energy and excitement coming from the groups. We realize that together we can end the need to take the lives of dogs and cats simply because there are not enough homes for them says Teresa Dockery, Spay Virginia Director.
